Cattle Product Questions
Do you have cattle products any other colors than blue?
No. We’ve built and shipped our tough blue bag since 1984 and we’re really happy with the blue, weather-resistant, coated fabric that we use for the dust bag outer covers.
How many cattle can be covered per bag?
There are a lot of factors that can impact how many cattle can benefit from a dusting bag. However, one rule of thumb is to allow one animal per lineal inch of bag (i.e. a 30 inch wide dust bag should be adequate for approximately 30 head of animals).
How much dust is needed per animal?
Check out information from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture regarding the use of insecticide dust in cattle here. Generally, allow .5 to 1 pound of insecticide dust per head per month. A sleeve of 12.5lbs of insecticide dust should be adequate for 12 to 25 head of cattle per month.
Where is the best place to hang a dust bag?
A dust bag should be located in areas where cattle frequent or pass through. Be careful to not hang the bag in areas that could contaminate feed or water with the insecticide and be sure to review and follow the insecticide manufacturer’s recommendations and safety precautions.
What is the proper height to suspend a dust bag?
A dust bag should hang about 4 to 6 inches below the top line of the animal in order to assure contact by the animal.
How often should I check on dust bags?
A dust bag should be monitored weekly. It may be advantageous to fill the bag more frequently with smaller amounts of dust to avoid waste. Avoid using a severely worn or damaged bag (horn punctures or damage from animals batting the bag).
What about using a dust bag with horned cattle?
Horned cattle can and frequently do damage dust bags. Some animals will bat or charge a bag resulting in the tearing or puncturing of the weather resistant cover and burlap liner. Again, check on your dust bag weekly.
Are dust bags re-usable?
Yes. Our high quality bags are re-usable. Dust bag should be removed at the end of a fly season. While some cattle producers use a dust bag for lice control during months when lice are prevalent, others opt to use dips or sprays. If a bag is not being used, it should be emptied of remaining dust and stored in a dry place until needed again.
Can a dust bag be used to control lice?
Yes, certain insecticide powders are effective against flies and lice. The dust bag may offer the advantage of lice control during the season when lice are most active without having to gather the animals for treatment through a chute or alley way.
Can a dust bag be used with dairy cattle?
Yes, confirm that the insecticide powder used in the bag has label clearance for use with dairy cattle. Read and follow the insecticide manufacturer’s recommendations and safety precautions.
What about flies building resistance to insecticides?
Unfortunately, flies can become resistant to insecticides. A possible solution might be rotating insecticides during the season. Check with your local veterinarian in regards to insecticides he/she has found effective in the area.
Can a dust bag be used with calves?
Yes, however be sure to follow your veterinarian and insecticide dust manufacturer’s recommendations as to age when selecting an insecticide to be used. Also, be aware that some calves may have a tendency to chew on a dust bag.
